Dark spots can be very stressful, especially if you’re dealing with acne breakouts or wrinkles on your skin. It can be terribly difficult to resist picking at your acne, but unfortunately, it can cause more dark spots wherever you pick. The same goes with rubbing and constantly “flattening” out your wrinkles with your fingers up close in the mirror. All this contact does nothing but irritate the skin, which can lead to more wrinkles and more dark spots, the opposite of what you want.
The first step in removing troublesome dark spots is to understand them more fully so that you know what kinds of treatments will actually be effective and which should be avoided. They are often referred to by a number of different names: brown spots, age spots, sun spots, and melasma just to name a few. These dark spots are the result of irritated skin and hormones among other things, but with a little work we can make them a thing of the past. They are actually something very simple: an overpigmentation of your skin called melanin that is brought to the surface by your body to help protect the skin itself, your largest organ. When you pick at the pimples or wrinkles or dark spots on your skin, it irritates them — causing additional scarring and even more of those annoying dark spots.
The hardest part about removing these dark spots will be avoiding one of the leading causes of them in the first place: picking at your acne or other blemishes. It can actually be extremely difficult to stop as it eventually becomes a habit if done over a long enough period of time. Some people pick at their skin when they are anxious or noticing unsightly spots and wrinkles. Try to stay conscious of it throughout the day. It might even help to leave a post-it note on your bathroom mirror to remind you not to pick at your skin if you need to.
At night time, you can apply a facial mask to help moisturize your skin while you sleep. This doubles as a barrier in between you and your dark spots, making it less likely that you’ll be tempted to pick at them. Actually, if you use a cleansing mask that contains aloe vera, it can lighten up your dark spots naturally, because aloe vera contains a compound called aloesin. This compound inhibits the hyperpigmentation that causes dark spots and is thought to actually lighten them if used consistently enough over a long period of time.
Once you stop picking at your face and causing yourself more dark spots from unnecessary irritation, you can move on to spot-treating them. Thankfully there are a number of different approaches for removing dark spots.
Some people opt for a completely natural approach to removing dark spots such as applying lemon juice, tomato juice, or buttermilk to the area before washing it away. This method is very safe, however it will take a considerable amount of time before you see your dark spots fade away, several months to begin noticing results.
Others try using retinoids (an animal form of vitamin A) on their dark spots to correct them, but this can be dangerous for your skin. Although retinoids can be effective in some cases, they WILL leave your skin seriously dry and irritated after use, which just ends up increasing the problem you were trying to get rid of in the first place.
